Where I'm From

From Flowers

I am from chenille bedspreads, Corn Flakes and a spoonful of sugar.

I am from the brick house in the suburbs, papered with gaudy orange flowers, noisy with children fighting, playing, crying, dreaming, warming cold fingers by an open fire.

I am from the wattle tree and the lavender; making rosewater and pressing leaves; daisy chains, rock and shell collections.

I am from a people I know little about, a people I've known all my life; people who feel very deeply; from Great Grandma Johanna and Irish and Dutch with a hint of French and so many things I would like to know.

I am from the lovers of cheese and chocolate and those who hoard things that may be useful some day.

From never quite measuring up and needing to learn everything the 'hard way'.

I am from a strong faith in God that is my present and my future. A hope for the earth that rests on a sure foundation.

I'm from farmers and sharecroppers from Old Countries who sought new shores, from meat and three veg, from overcooked greens.

From the great grandmother who's aboriginality was not spoken of until the details of her life were lost to the grave; from the other grandparents who must have seen war in Europe and whom I never really knew.

I am from faded photographs, a cheap memento, very little that is tangible, disconnectedness, reluctant independence, many questions. I am grateful that one day I'll meet them and know them when sadness is a thing of the past. I am creating a history of warmth, faith and love for my own children to cherish.

  4. Woops. I'm a bit slow today. This one is bittersweet. You have a confused background but it is so good that the future holds bright and clear though. Cherrie

  7. Just in case the links below went unnoticed, the original "Where I'm From" poem was written by George Ella Lyon. The version doing the rounds on the blogs comes from a writing assignment as noted in the link below my version.

A daisy chain is well illustrated here: http://kidinme.wordpress.com/2008/03/16/dandelions-day-3-how-to-make-a-dandelion-chain/
We made ours from dandelions too, as well as this type of flower:
